A historic site surroundedby vines

Bernardvillé developed at the foot of the Ungersberg (901 mètres), in a small valley, close to the Cistercian abbey at Baumgarten, founded in 1125 by the Bishop of Strasbourg, Cunon of Michelberg.

The coat of arms represents a T characteristic of the iconography of Saint Antony, patron saint of the parish. The hermit church has altarpieces, which are true rococo masterpieces.

During the Peasant War, in 1525, the inhabitants of Epfig and Dambach-la-Ville destroyed the monastery. Afterwards, the stones were used to build houses, but they were also used to construct the fortified walls of Benfeld.

The first constructions here are attributed to shepherds employed by the monks. Today, the oldest houses in this wine-growing village date from the middle of the XVIIth century.
