Capital of the wines of the Bas-Rhin
village fleurivillage fleurivillage fleuri

A picturesque little town at the foot of the Mont Sainte-Odile and the Pagan wall, Barr goes back to pre-Carolingian times ; its existence can be proven since 788 under the name of Barru.
An administrative and commercial centre, a town of craftsmen and wine-growers, Barr moved on from being the main town of a seigniory to become the administrative centre of a "canton" during the Revolution. The town saw the rapid growth of industry in the XIXth century ; the leather and textile industries flourished here in particular. But it was its vineyards that gave Barr its notoriety. They climb up the slops that border the valley of the Kirneck, which is indicated by a small white house perched up high on the hillside. The Grand Cru Kirchberg is the best known of the Grands Crus.

The old town center has recently taken on its authentic style once more : pedestrian areas so that you can better appreciate the half-timbered houses, the carved stone porches, the courtyards with their wooden galleries... The cobbled street, as well as lively little squares and the paths through the vines and the forest, allow you to enjoy the pleasures of a town in the country.

From its medieval past, there remains the Romanesque tower of Saint Martin's church, Folie Marco museum, the wall of the fortified castle upon wich the present was built.
