Birthplace of the Klevener, Alsace's noble vine

HeiligensteinThe distant origins of the village, perched at an altitude of 250 metres between forest and vineyards, remains a mystery to this day … It acquired its present name in 1460.

Situated at the foot of the Mont Saint-Odile, Heiligenstein is above all famous for its "Klevener", a vine unique in Alsace. Its vocation as a wine-growing village goes back to the IIIrd century, to the Roman era.

This flowered village is exceptionally well situated for lovers of rambling and hiking. It is the starting point for numerous way-marked trails, which will enable you to get some unrestricted views of the Rhine plain. The most adventurous of hikers will be able to follow the footpaths of the Club Vosgien to visit, amongst other things, the Landsberg Castle, le Pagan wall, the Mont Sainte-Odile...

Heiligenstein also offers a set of 9 fountains, including the Bear Fountain (Fontaine de l'Ours), which is classified as a historical monument.
