A commercial staging post in the heart of the vineyards
The village is said to have grown up around small Roman fort built by Julius Caesar. The locality is mentioned for the first time in 762 and its name is thought to derive from the Latin word "apex" (summit). It was the property of the Bishops of Strasbourg from the XIth century to the Revolution. The town is spread over 2 200 hectares. 560 of those hectares are planted with vines which makes Epfig the biggest wine-growing town in Alsace. The Fronholz wine trail passes through here.
