At the foot of the monks' mountain ('Le Mont des Moines')
This quiet little village huddles at the foot of the hillside where the Moenchberg Grand Cru is grown, at the edge of the massif of the Vosges.
The coat of arms and the name of the town, " Eiche " which means 'oak', indicate the same origin.
Eichhoffen, mentioned for the first time in the XIth
century, is a former possession of the Bishopric of Strasbourg, but Altorf Abbey also had large properties here, notably the domain court and the private chapel of Saint John the Baptist.
Vines cover virtually all the land belonging to the village. This is the result of an ancient practice developed by the monks at Altdorf Abbey, notably at Moenchberg, which means "monks' mountain".
